Background

Luang Prabang is in the northern part of Laos and is the principle town of the Luang Prabang region and formerly the capital of the Laos kingdom. The town is has many old Wats and is home to the old Royal Palace. There are also some beautiful waterfalls a short distance from the town ~30km.

Luang Prabang is most easily reached by plane from either Vientiane or Bangkok or by boat from Huay Xia. The town has many French colonial houses and also the French influence is seen in the local food. Luang Prabang
The Luang Prabang Bakery Guesthouse has five rooms that are let on the 2nd floor above the bakery. The rooms are small but are air conditioned which is great in the humid wet season. It is cooler and less humid in the dry season (Nov–Mar). The rooms also have satellite TV which was great because we were able to watch the football finals so far away from home.
PS I realise that travelling is all about the local lifestyle etc etc – but still, sometimes it’s great to have news from home! The first time I stayed in this hotel the staff were naturally friendly however when I returned a year later they seemed to be suffering from tourist shock.
Luang Prabang has become quite a tourist destination and things are changing quickly, possibly not for the better. I would recommend trying to get one of the balcony rooms overlooking the street. The picture above is shot from the balcony to the street below which becomes the scene of the night market on nights it doesn’t rain. It’s something well worth seeing. Also the bakery itself is a great place to get some breakfast or lunch with exquisite baguettes and pastries. Luang Prabang is a great place full of history and good food and well worth the trouble of getting there.

Price

We paid about US$20 per night but we hired three rooms so got a small discount. There are plenty of cheaper places in Luang Prabang particularly rooms with a fan and really you’re paying for the air con. If you need/want it, then the hotel is good value and a nice place to stay.

Verdict

Great place to visit and nice place to stay very central to all the tourist sites.
