In the first article we examined how you could travel from Australia to the UK by low cost airlines and have the flexibility to travel through South Asia and save money.

In this article I will show you how you can travel around the world cheaply - so you will never buy an around the world fare again.

I think primarily unless you have the surname Rockefeller or Gates when you decide to take a year off to travel around the world you realise that you will be travelling in the cheaper countries of the world.

These include Asia except Japan, South America, Central America and Africa. You would be able to travel through the middle tier cost countries as well. I would include in this list Eastern Europe, South Korea, Russia and Australia. The places I would avoid where you would spend a lot of money fast would be USA/Canada particularly the bigger cities, Japan and Western Europe.

Now I wouldn't discount travelling here either but obviously if you spent the majority of your time traveling in Scandinavia, then skiing in the Alps over to New York, a couple weeks in the Caribbean this will end up being very costly.

So where would I be looking to go on my year around the world trip bearing in mind that we are using low cost airlines.

  1. South East Asia
  2. China
  3. Eastern Europe
  4. Morocco
  5. Greek Islands/Turkey
  6. Mexico/Central America

So I think I will start this adventure in London for no particular reason but it is the starting point for a lot of journeys.

Flight 1

London to Athens flying EasyJet return is £92 - A$218

Spend 2 months in the Greek Islands and Turkey spending the days on the beach and the nights in the clubs.

Flight 2

London to Vancouver flying Zoom Airlines one way is £169 -  A$402

Travel from Vancouver down the west coast of USA to Mexico travel back through the east of Mexico to Texas and make your way back to Vancouver 3 months later.

Flight 3

Vancouver to Hong Kong flying Oasis Hong Kong one way is £192 - A$457

Travel from Hong Kong to Shanghai perhaps traveling by ferry to South Korea or Japan then back to Beijing and west to Xian and traveling in a loop to Yunnan Province where you can then take a train to Hanoi. From Hanoi you can travel by train through the length of Vietnam to Ho Chi Minh City. 3 months

Flight 4

Ho Chi Minh City to Singapore flying Jetstar one way is US$92 - A$110

Travel from Singapore through Malaysia to Thailand and perhaps north to Laos or Chaing Mai. Another option would be taking a flight to Rangoon in Burma. 2 months arriving in Bangkok

Flight 5

Bangkok to Macau flying Air Asia one way is B2559 - A$93.

You then take a ferry to Hong Kong before taking your flight back to London

Flight 6

Hong Kong to London flying Oasis Hong Kong one way is £129  A$307.

This trip has cost A$1587 in airfares which is about £670 that is much less than what it would cost for an around the world ticket.

This itinerary is for a period of 10 months travelling. The great thing with this option is you don't have a 1 year time period to complete your journey. All that you need to do is plan your travel date a couple months in advance to be able to get the low fares. And it is possible that you could get a low fare with short notice, but more unlikely.

Here a few options that you could add onto this 10 month trip

Tiger Airlines from Singapore to Darwin to travel through Australia.

Possibly Air India Express from Singapore to travel through India and onto Dubai

Mexicana to fly from Cancun to Havana to travel through Cuba

Easyjet or Ryanair from London to a number of places in Eastern Europe to travel through Eastern Europe or Russia

Easyjet or Ryanair from London to Morocco

There are a number of options you could use to travel to South America, from USA, the Caribbean or through Central America which would cost from US$200.

So you can see that if you are considering taking an around the world trip this would be a way of saving some extra dollars just by planning the day that you want to fly.
